Lung Biopsy

An open lung biopsy is done to remove an abnormal lung sample or lung tissue and is performed under general anesthesia. This biopsy method involves a surgery, in which the chest wall is opened through which a small fiberoptic thoracoscope is inserted into the small opening of the chest wall.

An open biopsy is done in conditions where both Bronchoscopic and needle biopsy methods are not feasible or have not been successful or when a larger piece of lung tissue is required.
After collection of the required biopsy sample, a drainage tube is inserted via the area of incision, one end attached to the chest and other end connected to a collection container. The chest tube is usually placed to remove air present inside the chest and avoid lung collapse, and is removed within a few days. Hospitalization is usually needed for 3 to 5 days and the stitches will be removed in 7 to 14 days. The entire biopsy procedure takes about an hour and after the procedure the patient is taken to the recovery room. A bandage is fixed on to the biopsy site in order to avoid bleeding and the patient is advised to keep the biopsy site covered and dry for 48 hours.
